CSET Recognizes Elder Abuse Awareness Month

[Tulare County, California] On June 7th, the Tulare County Board of Supervisors presented a proclamation recognizing June 2022 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month in Tulare County. Tulare County Adult Protective Services and partners, like Community Services Employment Training (CSET), were present to receive the proclamation. This proclamation commemorates the significance of protecting our local seniors by raising awareness of the signs of elder abuse, and how to report and prevent it.

CSET urges the community to protect our aging population by learning more about the signs and risks of elder abuse and how to report it to local agencies. Types of elder abuse can involve self-neglect, physical abuse, neglect by others, sexual abuse, financial abuse, mental abuse, abandonment, and isolation. In California, more than 15,000 reports of elder abuse are submitted per month (an estimated 202,549 cases per year) to Adult Protective Services. Elder abuse affects seniors of all socio-economic backgrounds, genders, cultures, and races. Seniors who have mental or physical disabilities are at greater risk of experiencing abuse. Unfortunately, elder abuse is often unreported, and therefore the exact number of elder abuse violations is unknown.

CSET staff wore purple to promote awareness and show support for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th - photos were shared through our social media channels. CSET’s Senior Services team is committed to improving the lives of local seniors by connecting them to essential community resources that aid their health and well-being. More than 2,000 local seniors benefit yearly from CSET’s Senior Services which include wellness checks, nutritional meal deliveries, and referrals to additional community resources.
